The Seattle Seahawks lost three starters to injury during their 20-3 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night. Left tackle Charles Cross, wide receiver Rashid Shaheed, and running back Velus Jones Jr. each left the contest at different times due to physical ailments.
Cross sustained an ankle injury with less than eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill landed on Cross' right leg during the play. An NFL Network report published on Monday identified the injury as a high-ankle sprain. The report suggested Cross could return to action after one to two weeks.
Head coach Mike Macdonald stated on Monday afternoon that the team was still determining the severity of Cross' injury. Macdonald declined to confirm the details of the external report. He noted that the information did not come from the coaching staff or the team trainer. Josh Jones, who started three games for Cross last season, is expected to take over the starting left tackle role if Cross misses time.
Shaheed did not play in the second half of the game due to a knee injury. Macdonald said it was unclear if the injury occurred during the final play of the first half, when Sam Darnold threw an interception, or earlier in the contest. The coach described the initial assessment of the injury as positive but said the timeline for a return remained uncertain.
Velus Jones Jr. was ruled out early in the second half with a hamstring injury. This injury adds to the roster concerns at running back. Zach Charbonnet completed his first week of full practice participation on Monday as he recovers from an ACL injury suffered in January. First-round pick Jadarian Price is expected to return to practice this week after spending the last month on injured reserve with a chest injury.
Macdonald indicated that any of the three running backs could play in Monday night's game against the Chicago Bears. He stated that the team had not ruled out any combination of the players. The Seahawks are limited to eight returns from injured reserve during the regular season. Irvin Charles and Anthony Bradford have already returned this season. Price will become the third player to return when he rejoins practice this week.
Robert Henry Jr. has been inactive in all three games since joining the roster from the Washington Commanders practice squad. A player signed from a practice squad must remain on the roster for at least three weeks. The Seahawks could release Henry to free up a roster spot if Jones requires a move to injured reserve.
