Snohomish County Public Utility District officials have proposed holding electric rates steady for the 2027 fiscal year. The utility is recommending a 0% increase in electricity costs for the coming year. This decision applies to customers in Snohomish County and Camano Island.

John Haarlow, the CEO and General Manager of Snohomish PUD, stated that the decision prioritizes customer needs. He noted that many local families and businesses continue to face financial challenges. Haarlow said the utility is listening to customers and managing costs carefully to keep service affordable.

The PUD is a community-owned, not-for-profit utility. Its mission includes providing safe, reliable, and affordable electricity. The proposed budget reflects financial planning and operational efficiencies found by utility employees. It also accounts for customer actions that reduce overall energy consumption.

Maintaining steady rates requires continued investment in the electric grid. The 2027 budget includes projects to modernize infrastructure and improve reliability. The utility plans to use federal grants to help pay for these upgrades. These improvements aim to mitigate wildfire risk and enhance grid efficiency.

Customers contribute to rate stability through energy conservation. The PUD encourages households and businesses to weatherize buildings and upgrade to efficient equipment. When individual users reduce their electricity consumption, the total demand on the grid decreases. This reduction saves money for the utility and its customers.

The PUD offers various tools to help customers manage their energy use. These include energy-efficiency programs for homes and businesses. New technology, such as advanced meters, will provide customers with more detailed information about their consumption patterns.

The 0% rate proposal results from numerous operational decisions made throughout the year. PUD employees and customers both contribute to the goal of keeping the electric system strong. The utility aims to keep rates stable and predictable for the communities it serves.

The PUD Board of Commissioners will review the proposed 2027 budget at a public meeting on Nov. 17. Customers are invited to attend the meeting to ask questions and share their perspectives. Board meetings allow customer-owners to participate directly in utility decisions.

The PUD also provides financial assistance options for customers who need help with bills. These options include income-qualified bill discounts and the Community Energy Fund. The utility also offers payment arrangements and a Budget Payment Plan for those seeking additional support.
