Robert John Crawford, 49, stood in the Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday, October 26, and pleaded not guilty to the murder of his wife. The former Royal Australian Air Force pilot now faces a jury that will decide whether he staged an accident to hide a killing rooted in financial fear and marital breakdown.

Prosecutor Chris Cook told the court that Crawford killed Frances Elizabeth Crawford against the backdrop of a deteriorating relationship. He alleged that the defendant then worked to make the death appear accidental. The state argues that Frances Crawford died from either strangulation or blunt-force trauma, a claim Justice Lincoln Crowley outlined to the jurors during the initial proceedings.

The prosecution cites money as the primary motive. Jurors heard that the marriage was near its end and that Crawford faced substantial losses in a divorce settlement. According to Cook, the pilot wanted to keep the family home and avoid splitting his superannuation with his wife. These financial stakes formed the core of the motive presented to the jury.

Cook also described a double life for the accused. He claimed Crawford presented himself as a man of strong Christian values while behaving differently in private. The prosecutor labeled the defendant a "love rat" and alleged he was not committed to the marriage. Four women with whom Crawford allegedly had affairs are expected to testify during the trial.

Frances Crawford had been weighing her options, torn between ending the marriage and giving her husband a final chance to demonstrate commitment to her and their children. She had established specific boundaries for the relationship. The court noted these conditions included grounds for divorce based on sexual or emotional infidelity, pornography, and masturbation.

The jury is scheduled to visit the couple's rural property west of Toowoomba on Wednesday. They will view the site in Upper Lockyer where Frances Crawford's body was found beside a ride-on lawnmower at the foot of a retaining wall on July 29, 2024. Justice Crowley told the jurors that seeing the location would help them understand the evidence presented in court.

The trial is expected to continue for three weeks. Prosecutors may call as many as 47 witnesses. Crawford’s defense barrister had not yet delivered an opening statement when the plea was entered on Monday.
